AB OBJECTIVE: To avoid reactions of fright and rejection linked to an
intense suffering on the part of caregivers working with AIDS patients
in long and medium sojourn hospitals or clinics. METHOD AND POPULATION:
A program of annual training addressed monthly to the entire caregivers'
team. Pluridisciplinary reflection groups with video support:--training
recipients: doctors, physiotherapists, nurses...--training team:
doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, psychologist from the infectious and
tropical diseases department of Nice's CHU. RESULTS: To this day, around
100 persons have benefited from training sessions which have brought to
light the following questions and difficulties: for the doctors: how to
evolve from curative care to palliative care, effect, on care quality,
of therapeutic abandonment, what to reply when the patient says I'm
going to die, the meaning of pain, assessment of pain. for the
caregivers; how to protect themselves psychologically, how to start a
dialogue, how to listen, what to do in front of the patients'
resignation, how to take charge of families, the transgression of the
law by drug addicts, the risks of contamination. In answer to these
identified problems, it seems interesting to favour a maximum exchange
of practices, of actual experiences, between different teams in order
that the most experienced ones may stimulate the others. For the
training team it is also a valorization and a stimulation essentially in
the intellectual dimension. CONCLUSION: The practical application of
such a program answers the team's request to have, on the one hand, an
adapted and concrete information and, on the other hand, to perceive the
situations differently in order to find new ways of adapting to reality.
Such a task seems necessary in order to preserve the individual's
interests and also those of the Public Health.
